The 2017 championship is open to amateur golfers who have an up-to-date USGA-GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 12.0 (as determined by the July 1, 2017 Handicap Revision). The field will be comprised of the lowest 80 handicap indexes including the 2016 exempted players. As in past years, the primary tournament will be an individual championship, but will also include a team event in which the best three scores from each day will determine the team winner. If a club does not have representation of three players, they will be ineligible for the team championship. There will also be a senior championship within the event, this is for amateur golfers who will have reached their 50th birthday by July 1, 2017. The senior players will play the same tees and yardage as the rest of the field. All registrations must be received and paid online by July 1, 2017.

Joe was a graduate of Methuen High School and turned the passion for golf instilled in him by his dad, into a career as golf professional. From his beginnings at George Gelt’s Crystal Springs Golf Club and then under the tutelage of Ted Murphy at Garrison Golf Center, Joe went on to a successful career as the Director of Golf and Head Professional at a number of area golf clubs.
As a successful junior golfer, he won many titles including The Boston Globe Junior Golf Championship, two Junior Rogers Championships, and a New England Junior Title. Later in life, Joe acquired a new passion and secondary career as a basketball official. He excelled at this, working countless high school and NCAA games in all divisions. Joe truly enjoyed organizing officials for the Greater Lawrence Christmas Basketball Tournament.
What Joe found most rewarding, was the camaraderie and the mentoring of aspiring young golfers and officials. He was a longstanding member of the PGA of America, The NEPGA, The National Association of Sports Officials, the CBOA, and the IAABO. As a result of this inaugural championship, the Board of Directors of the Joseph F. Healey Memorial Golf Championship are pleased to announce the creation of the Joseph F. Healey Memorial Scholarship. The Joseph F. Healey Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee will award a scholarship to deserving seniors of the Class of 2012, who are members or employees of the participating golf clubs. The funds for the scholarships have been raised by area golfers who participated in qualifying events held at our area golf courses over the past month to play in the Joseph F. Healy Memorial Championship.
The award and amount will be based on the following criteria: academic performance, character, involvement in extracurricular and community activities during their high school years, personal essay, and semi-finalists will be invited to an interview. The Board of Directors takes great pleasure in inviting our youth to actively pursue this scholarship in memory of “Joe” Healey.
